ABOUT US

May

MAY SUEN

May is a native San Franciscan who loves travel, photography, sampling new cuisines, and watching adorable dogs. She loves road trips but not motion sickness. She got her adventurous spirit from her mom, who would come up with fun destinations she heard from her co-workers. They would hit up AAA for a map, and then May would plan and navigate while her mom drove. So far she’s been to 25+ countries and previously lived in Thailand for almost a year, as well as Japan and China for shorter stints. May would love to housesit around the world and partake in slow-traveling.

DAVID DAVENPORT

David hails from Chula Vista (San Diego) and loves Mexican food! He also loves May! He is a transit planner by day and sometimes by night, seeks out new and “different” music and music videos, and enjoys relaxing scooter and bicycle rides. His mom supported his map habit from an early age. He is always on the prowl for a new travel destination and has visited 20+ countries so far. David can be found working on home improvement projects and somehow convinced May to paint the entire house with him during lockdown.

OUR STORY

JULY 7, 2019

May and David connected on Hinge, a dating app that came recommended by their amazing friends Ross and Puneet, which is where they met their loved ones. After chatting online and discovering numerous mutual interests, they met at Cafe Leila in Berkeley for their first date on July 7, 2019. The initial plan called for a meeting over tea, but they extended their date with a stroll around the neighborhood, which is where David had previously lived for nearly 10 years. The conversation went well, and they ended up continuing with a drink at Acme and dinner at Eat @ Thai. They have been inseparable ever since!

Hinge

JANUARY 2020

May and David became official around their 6th monthiversary. They celebrated with a weekend getaway to Calistoga and enjoyed refreshing hot springs–one of their shared interests. May began the move from her San Francisco flat to David’s house in Richmond, and shortly thereafter, the COVID shelter-in-place order cemented their living situation. It is hard to believe now, but for the first few weeks of SIP, they actually shared a home office together!

SEPTEMBER 2020

There was a huge surge in dog adoptions during SIP. May and David submitted applications for a few adoptions but weren’t selected. In one case, the odds were 1 to 200. It seemed like dog fostering could be an option, so when May asked David if he would be interested in providing emergency foster care for some dogs from the Milo Foundation, she was surprised when he said yes. Why? Well it was for 2 moms (Cocoa and Latte) and 4 puppies (Biscuit, Brutus, Chester, and Mocha)! It was a difficult week with a variety of surprises, but overall, it was a very enriching experience filled with sleep-deprived nights and endless laughter. Biscuit, the sweetest puppy, was adopted by May’s friends and now goes by Baldwin. May and David decided to try fostering again but agreed to watch just one dog at a time to give them proper attention. Their next foster was Ricky, a Taiwanese Formosan Mountain Dog mix who flew straight from Taiwan and was rescued by the Animal Rescue Squad International (ARSI), and he spent 2 weeks with them before going to his fur-ever family. May and David signed up for Rover after that, and they have provided boarding for 8 dogs and counting.
Fish Rocks

2020, 2021 & SIP

The COVID lockdown felt simultaneously long and short, a period when time was a construct that existed only outside of the house. May and David painted most of the interior of their house, had new fences and a shed installed in their back yard, and brainstormed many travel plans. They took road trips to visit David’s family in San Diego and Tecopa (near Death Valley). They took another weekend getaway to Calistoga, only to have it cut short in the middle of the night because of a nearby wildfire. Just a couple weeks after getting fully vaccinated, and with international travel still off the table, they went on an RV road trip from Chicago to Denver via Route 66. They even managed to take a summer trip to Las Vegas for their second anniversary, where they stayed in luxury at the Palazzo…but with the catch that daytime highs reached 115. Ouch!

SEPTEMBER 27, 2021

David proposed to May a day before her birthday on the colorful, picturesque Burano Island in Venice, Italy, with a ring nearly as colorful as the island’s houses, which were painted by the wives of fishermen to ensure they could find their way home through the fog after a long day at sea. Happy tears, joyous memories, and promises for a lovely future together were shared on a bridge while May’s amazing photographer (and model friend!) Damon captured the moment. Once engaged, their first international trip together continued through Italy and Greece for 2 more weeks. Wow, what a trip!
City Hall

JULY 7, 2022

May and David plan to say their “I Dos” on their 36th monthiversary at San Francisco City Hall. The small ceremony will be held with their immediate family.

AUGUST 27, 2022

August 27 marks the exact midpoint between May and David’s birthdays. They were born 2 months, 2 days, 2 hours, and 3 minutes (shucks, so close!) apart. They look forward to celebrating their future together with their amazing family and friends. That’s you!

Q&A

WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?

Please plan on wearing cocktail attire. We will enjoy drinks on an outdoor patio with sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, and dinner will be held indoors. Summer weather in the Bay Area can be breezy and cool in the later afternoon, so dress in layers to stay warm and cozy.

ARE THERE ANY COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS?

Local regulations require every attendee ages 12 and over to provide proof of vaccination and ID to attend. Proof of a booster shot is not required, and restrictions and requirements may evolve over time. Trader Vic’s has its own COVID-19 policies, which you can read here. We would love to see you in person, but if you are feeling ill or have been exposed to COVID-19 within 2 weeks of the wedding reception, we welcome your toasts from afar.

CAN I BRING A DATE? ARE KIDS WELCOME?

Invitations have been sent to specific friends and family members. Invitations addressed to families include children. Feel free to reach out to May or David if you have any questions. When RSVPing, please provide the name of each person who will be attending, and let us know if any booster seats or high chairs are needed. We would love to have everyone join us in our celebration, but we are required to stick with the maximum number of guests permitted by the venue.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?

Plan on joining us at 5 PM for drinks on the picturesque patio, with dinner to follow an hour or so later.

CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE A FOOD ALLERGY OR DIETARY RESTRICTION?

The salad and dessert is vegetarian, and a vegetarian main course is available. (David is vegetarian, as you know!) If you have a specific need or request, please reach out to May or David and they will see if Trader Vic’s can accommodate it.

HOW DO I GET THERE? IS THERE PARKING?

Trader Vic’s has free on-site parking. Parking is self-park or valet depending on the restaurant’s schedule. Carpooling is encouraged, and of course Uber and Lyft work too. The free Emery Go-Round shuttle connects the restaurant with the main shopping and hotel district in town as well as MacArthur BART Station every 20 minutes. Service runs until after 9 PM. See details here.

I AM COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN. WHERE SHOULD I STAY?

A block of rooms has not been reserved for our celebration. However, there are several nearby hotels that may be of interest to you. The hotel closest to Trader Vic’s is the Hilton Garden Inn, which is within walking distance. There are a few more hotels close by in Emeryville. Slightly further away is the new Aiden by Best Western, which is situated in a quiet business district near North Berkeley BART Station. And the new Moxy Oakland Downtown is in the hip, gritty Uptown district of Oakland.

DO YOU HAVE A REGISTRY?

Your presence at our celebration is already a gift! Beyond that, if you wish, red envelopes are appreciated (a Chinese tradition) or you can contribute to our honeymoon fund here.

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU DOING THAT WEEKEND?

We haven’t exactly decided, but we may have a celebratory round of drinks at Prizefighter, which is a neat bar on the north side of Emeryville, on Friday or Saturday night. Also, we might grab a casual bite to eat on Sunday in the late morning or early afternoon. If interested, reach out to David and he’ll put together something more concrete!

WHAT IF I HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS?

Please direct any additional questions to May or David. You should already have their contact info. 🙂

REGISTRY

Your presence is a gift to us. However, if you wish to give us a gift beyond that, we welcome red envelopes (a Chinese tradition) or a contribution to our honeymoon fund via Honeyfund.
